Department of Microbiology was separated from Department of Pathology on 1.12.1977. Dr. Lina Deodhar headed the department which started with only five members. Initially the work was started with only two sections: Serology and Bacteriology.
The department got the first M.D. student registration in 1979, M.Sc. in 1982 and PhD. in 1990. Till date 9 PhD. students, 29 M.Sc. students and 97 M.D. students have successfully passed with flying colours. Three students topped the University exams at the MD examinations and one bagged Gold Medal. The alumni of this department are on various positions on the national and international levels and have many national as well as international publications to their credit.
The department worked under Dr. Lina Deodhar, Dr. Alka Gogte, Dr. Meenakshi Mathur, Dr. Gita Natarajas Head and currently Dr. Sujata Baveja is heading the department.
Today the department has grown to a strength of 57 people and has 6 major sections (Bacteriology, Serology, Virology, Parasitology, Immunology and Mycology) with several subsections like Mycobacteriology, Hospital Infection control, Anaerobic bacteriology etc. The average work load is more than three lakhs samples every year.
All the staff members actively participate and hold positions in conferences at International, National, State Chapter and local Conferences. Integrated Teaching Pathologists and Microbiologists meetings are regularly held. Almost every year, Workshops / CME / Updates are organized by the department. Regular post graduate activities like Journal Reviews, lectures, weekly seminars, discussions and practical/ case presentations are conducted at departmental and intercollegiate levels.
Sky is the limit for the growth and progress of this Department.
