The Department of Pharmacology was established in the year 1966 with Dr R S Satoskar as its first Head of department. It is the matter of pride to LTMMC that the first popular Indian text book of Pharmacology, “Pharmacology and Therapeutics” was authored by Dr R S Satoskar and was first published in 1969.
The Department of Pharmacology has MCI approval and conducts both under graduate and post graduate MUHS courses in Pharmacology. The department strives to impart to the students the basic knowledge of drugs which forms the foundation of the medical education. In the past decade Pharmacology has gained importance due to the unprecedented pace of development in the field of drugs which has further emphasized the relevance of Pharmacology to the health professionals.
In the prestigious medical institute of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College & General Hospital, Mumbai, the department of Pharmacology plays a very vital role in medical education. Under the enigmatic guidance of the various past heads of department, this department has grown over the years from a small under graduate unit to a full fledged under graduate (MBBS, Nursing, OT/PT, BPMT courses) and post graduate department. It has expanded its wings from preclinical animal studies to clinical pharmacology under one roof. It also has the distinction of being a recognized Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre (AMC) under the Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PvPI). Another feather in our cap is the “Bulletin on ADR”, which is published every four months and gives a glimpse of the ADR monitoring activities being conducted in LTMMC & GH.
The department of Pharmacology is situated in the college building on 2nd floor. There are 10 teaching staff members and 17 Non¬teaching staff members in the department. The department also runs the Radioisotope unit and Thyroid Clinic and maintains the institutional central animal house.
