Started as Tetanus ward, the service was separated from Department of Medicine & new academic department of Respiratory Diseases was created on 1/5/1995 & got the recognition of Mumbai University in June 1995 under the leadership of Dr. A. C. Shah, first Honorary Prof. & Head of Respiratory Diseases appointed on 28/8/1995. Now this department has full time Prof. & Head, Dr. N.T. Awad since December 1999. 

The postgraduates students are studying for a degree course in Pulmonary Medicine Diseases.  The department now has full fledge services of Intensive Respiratory Care Unit for the management of patients with acute respiratory failure due to ARDS, COPD, Pneumonia, Poisoning etc with class 1 advanced ventilators and monitors. Tetanus & Hanging patients are primary admitted in IRCU only.
