The Department of Biochemistry is mainly involved in

  • Imparting teaching to various courses.
  • Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory services.
  • Research activities.

A.Imparting Teaching To Various Courses :-
The students of following courses are taught theoretical and practical aspects of biochemistry as prescribed by respective universities. 
Courses Under Muhs-

  • I MBBS
  • I yr Bachelor of Occupational Therapy & Bachelor of Physiotherapy
  • Post Graduate Diploma In Medical Laboratory Technology(PGDMLT)

Courses Under Mumbai University-

  • M.Sc (Biochemistry) by papers
  • M.Sc (Biochemistry) by research

By MUHS:
I MBBS:

  • Admission Criteria – MHCET, AIPMT (After 12th Standard)
  • Course Duration – 1 year
  • Total admission Strength – 100

Teaching Time Schedule :

  • 3 days of the week
  • Lectures 4 PER Week
  • Monday (M) -10.30-11.30 a.m.
  • Wednesday (W) – 10.30-11.30 a.m. & 11.30-   12.30 p.m.
  • Friday (F) -10.30-11.30 a.m.
  • Tutorials/Viva-(M,W,F) 1.30 – 2.15 p.m.
  • Practicals-(M,W,F) –  2.15 – 4.30 p.m.                                                                                 
  • Minimum Required Attendance: 75% for theory & 80% for practicals

Internal exams:

  • Two exams (Theory and Practicals) are  conducted during the tenure as per the guidelines of MUHS.

Internal Assessment

  • Theory-20 marks
  • Practical- 20 marks

Minimum requirement for internal assessment: A candidate must obtain 35% in Theory and practicals taken together.

  • Admission Criteria  – On the basis of Merit (After B.Sc.)
  • Course Duration – 1 year
  • Total Strength – 10
  • Minimum required attendance – 75%
  • Course Content – Syllabus 

By Mumbai University –

a) M.Sc. (Biochemistry) by papers –

  • Admission Criteria – Merit Basis (After B.S c with Biochemistry/ Chemistry)
  • Course Duration – 2 yrs
  • Total Strength – 10 (College seats – 3, University seats – 7)
  • Course Content – Theory and Practicals- as per the syllabus of Mumbai University
  • Time Schedule
    – 3 days for lectures at different venues assigned by the University,
    – 3 full days for practicals in the department of biochemistry.

Mumbai University Exam Pattern

  • Part I – 4 papers (75 marks each)
  • Total 300 marks
  • Paper I – Advanced bioorganic chemistry
  • Paper II – Advanced biophysical chemistry
  • Paper III – Metabolism & physiology
  • Paper IV – Biochemical processes in industry.
  • Part II – 4 papers (75 marks each)
  • Total 300 marks   
    Paper V – Biochemical genetics & genomics        
  • Paper VI – Advanced immunology
  • Paper VII – Clinical  Biochemistry & nutrition
  • Paper VIII –research methodology ,biostatistics & bioinformatics.

Practical Examination – 200 marks (Duration 2 days; Each for M.Sc Part I and M.Sc Part II)

Dissertation compulsory in ) M.Sc. part II & has weightage of  40 marks (which are included in practicals).

b) M.Sc. (Biochemistry) by Research

  • Admission Criteria – Merit Basis (After B.Sc. in Biochemistry/ Chemistry)
  • Approximate Duration – 3 yrs
  • Strength – 5 per year (depending on availability of guides)
  • Course Content – For Research and Theory as per the syllabus of Mumbai University                             
  • Research proposal is approved by the Board of Studies in Biochemistry Mumbai University

Exam Pattern :

  • Submission of Thesis after passing two papers in Theory (100 marks each).

Location :

  • The Biochemistry Department is located in the college building on the third floor-right wing.

Timings:

  • 9.00am – 4.30pm (Mon-Fri)
  • 9.00am – 1.00pm (Sat)

Department is closed on Sundays & Public Holidays

Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory-

  • The department is proud to have state of the art clinical Biochemistry laboratory providing services to OPD & indoor patients of our hospital. A dedicated team of technical staff well supervised by SSO & teaching staff is providing timely ,accurate & efficientlaboratory services.
