The
Department of Neonatology at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal medical College &
General Hospital runs a state -of art 40 bedded
Neonatal Intensive care Unit that provides yeoman services to sick and preterm newborn babies born in the
hospital as well as those referred from outside for specialized care.
The
Department was established in 1992 by Dr. Armida Fernandez, then Professor
& Head of the Department, Dr. JayashreeMondkar, then Associate Professor
& Dr. Rajesh Savargaonkar , Lecturer in the Department..
The
department has to its credit the establishment of the first Human Milk Bank In
Asia, established on 27th November 1989 and is currently in the 27th
year of its existence.

Neonatology Course
The
Department is recognized by the Medical
Council of India for the Post-Doctoral course of DM in Neonatology.
One year fellowship in Neonatology
from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences 2 seats per year.
Besides
offering quality care to these tiny babies, the unit also serves to train
undergraduate and post graduate students, nurses and observers from across the
country in the art of neonatal care.
