History of Department

The Anatomy Department of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital was started on 18th November 1964 under the able professorship of the late Dr. V.G. Kale. The first batch of 60 students for MBBS was admitted on 20th November 1964. The staff at that time consisted of one Professor and six part time demonstrators.

Dr. M.B. Kher joined as Professor and Head of Anatomy in 1966 and was also acting Dean from 1980 to 1981. Dr. J.K. Bhat took the charge as next Professor and Head of the Department from 1982 and Dr. Mrs. S.C. Kelkar from 1991. They were followed by Dr. Smt. K. Iyer from 2000 to 2003 and Dr. Mrs. P.D. Athavia from 2003 to 2009.

Each of the above stalwarts contributed in their own way for the progress of the Anatomy Department.

The Department was recognized by Medical Council of India in February 1979 for the post graduation course of M.S. Anatomy. Many students graduated and were awarded M.S. Anatomy degree affiliated to University of Mumbai. At present the department is awarding the degree of M.D. Anatomy to the post graduate students affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

The year 1980 saw an increase in the number of students admitted to 1st M.B.B.S. from 60 to 100.

 In 1986 under the leadership of the then Head of the Department Dr. J.K. Bhat the movement “Voluntary Donation of body after death” was started. Since then for the last 28 years this movement for Body Donation is given an overwhelming response.

In 1992, Genetic Laboratory as a part of the department of Fetal Medicine was established in Anatomy Department. At present the Genetic Laboratory is used for Stem Cell Research in collaboration with Neurosurgery Department.

This college became teaching center for B.Sc Occupational Therapy & BSc Physiotherapy in the year 1990 and for the course BPMT in the year 2010. In these courses Anatomy forms an integral part of their first year syllabus.
