Inpatient Ward Services

Location – Ward 21/22, Hospital building, 2nd floor.

Ø Children requiring observation, supervision, evaluation, intervention or ICU care are admitted in either the general wards or in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as per indication.

Ø There are total 120 pediatric beds.

Ø Senior pediatricians take daily rounds and are available round the clock for consultation. Resident doctors are available 24 hrs for monitoring and management of patients.

Ø Patients from other hospitals are often transferred to this hospital for intensive care, expert opinion and thorough evaluation.

 

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Location – OPD building, 1st floor

Ø The Pediatric ICU was established in 1976 by Dr. Meenakshi Mehta.

Ø It has 12 beds, including 2 emergency beds and is now equipped with 10 ventilators, 9multipara meter monitors, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, ECG machine.

Ø The various facilities available in the PICU include invasive and non-invasive ventilation, continuous monitoring, peritoneal dialysis and tracheostomy.

Ø It admits approximately 600 patients per year with 15-20 % of the patients requiring ventilation.

Ø The average occupancy of the Pediatric ICU is 95 to 100% with a crude mortality rate of 35%.

Ø The PICU patients are managed by resident doctors and staff nurses under the supervision of faculty.

Ward 37- Hematology Oncology ward

Location – Casualty building, first floor

  • 20-bedded centrally air-conditioned ward with HEPA filters.
  • It also includes a separate area for day care chemotherapy and hematology patients, fully equipped oncology rooms, four high risk rooms with ventilators, a bone marrow transplant unit and separate sterilized chemotherapy preparation room.
  • 19 Bone marrow transplants have been conducted till April 2018
  • There are isolation cubicles for leukemic children requiring strict asepsis.

Pediatric Haematology laboratory
Hematology-Oncology laboratory was established in 1992, where following hematological investigations are carried out:

Ø Complete blood count, ESR and Peripheral smear

Ø Reticulocyte count, Sickling, NESTROFT

Ø Coagulation Profile including PT, aPTT, TT, Plasma Fibrinogen, Factor XIII assay

Ø Serum iron studies

Ø Hemoglobin Electrophoresis by HPLC

Ø G6PD qualitative test

Ø Bone Marrow aspirate slides - staining and reporting

Urban Health Centre, Dharavi

Ø The Urban Health Centre (UHC) is situated in Dharavi and is a peripheral unit of LokmanyaTilak Municipal General Hospital.

Ø It has a 30-bedded Pediatric ward.

Ø The following facilities are available at UHC, Dharavi: 

  • Outdoor patient clinic:(Timing- 9.30 am -12.30 pm daily) - Children less than 5 years of age are seen by the Pediatrician and those above 5 yrs are initially screened by residents from the Preventive and Social Medicine Department (PSM) and then referred to the Pediatrician if needed. 
  • Immunization:Children receive immunization daily as per UIP schedule.
  • Nutritional Rehabilitation, Research and training Centre (NRRTC):Children with malnutrition are admitted in Pediatric ward. Along with it there is MNT production unit,through which MNT is given to SAM patients.
  • Indoor Patient Department: there is a 30 bedded ward for indoor admission of Pediatric patients at UHC Dharavi. New born babies delivered at UHC are also seen by Pediatric Faculty.
  • Autism Intervention Centre:Children with autism spectrum disorders are evaluated, certified and various therapies are given. This is a multidisciplinary centre which includes various specialitiesi.e developmental pediatrician , occupational therapist , physiotherapist , social worker and speech therapist.

  1. Pediatric Nephrology OPD

Ø Pediatric Nephrology, established in 1993, provides advanced care for children with disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.

Ø The OPD runs once a week under the charge of a Professor and an assistant Professor whose duties include supervision of patient care and administration.

Ø The division caters to 100 new patients and more than 500 old cases suffering from kidney disease every year

Ø Patients are monitored for growth, development and side effects of the drug used in the treatment.

Ø Parents are counseled about the disease, need for treatment, importance of compliance and regular follow up.

Ø Facilities for peritoneal dialysis are available in the Pediatric intensive care unit. Hemodialysis is done in conjunction with the Artificial Kidney Department (AKD).

  1. Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology
    Pediatric Gastroenterology Outdoor was established in 1987 to treat and prevent dehydration.

Ø In the year 1990 it was converted into DTTU (Diarrhoea disease Treatment and Training Unit.) Oral rehydration Solution and Rice Kanji was offered to patients.

Ø Since 1999, Pediatric Gastroenterology Outdoor clinic to deal with chronic Gastrointestinal and Liver as well as Nutritional Problems was started.

Ø Upper G.I. Endoscopy started since April 2015 and colonoscopy is done in collaboration with adult Gastroenterologists.

  1. Pediatric Epilepsy Clinic :

Ø This clinic was started in 1992.

Ø We offer comprehensive epilepsy care including diagnosis of various epilepsy syndromes and management of refractory epilepsy. It is managed efficiently by experts in this field.

Ø Video EEG services were started in 2013 for diagnosis of various epilepsy syndromes

Ø Parent education programme for children with epilepsy is conducted every year where parents and children are given information regarding the disease process, taught the emergency management of epilepsy, need for urgent referral, importance of compliance and regular follow up.

Ø The clinic caters to more than 1000 new patients and more than 3000 old patients suffering from epilepsy every year.

  • 4. Pediatric Hematology-Oncology OPD

Ø This clinic started in 1986. 

Ø This caters to comprehensive care of children with hematological disorders i.e complete diagnosis and evaluation, as well as efficient management.

Ø Childhood cancers are diagnosed and chemotherapy is also given for these disorders.

Ø Outdoor Thalassemia Transfusion Centre runs every day from 9am to 4 pm in college building, first floor and transfuses on an average 20 to 25 children daily. Thalassemia children are advised chelation therapy and monitored for iron overload related issues.

  1. Pediatric Cardiology clinic

Ø This clinic was established in year 2010.

Ø New patients with heart disease (congenital and acquired) and patients referred from other Institutes are examined at this clinic. They get diagnostic and therapeutic help.

Ø At present 2D ECHO with colourdoppler is done in collaboration with cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery department.

Pediatric 2D Echo services are started since 2018 and the echocardiography of children with complex

congenital heart disease is done by pediatric cardiologists followed by intervention.

  1. Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics Clinic:

Ø This clinic was started in 1985.

Ø It caters to children with acute infections of the CNS and chronic neurological problems such as neurodegenerative ,neurometabolic, neuromuscular and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Ø Comprehensive evaluation of these children including genetic diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, counseling and therapeutic interventions is offered here.

Ø A multidisciplinary team consisting of a pediatric neurologist, developmental pediatrician, pediatric occupational and physiotherapist, pediatric orthopaedician, social worker and rehabilitation consultant work together for the betterment of these children. 

Ø Parent education programme is conducted every year where parents and children are given information regarding normal developmental milestones with an aim to detect developmental delay at the earliest.

Ø Patients from other hospitals are often referred to this hospital for expert opinion and thorough evaluation.

  1. Pediatric Respiratory OPD

Ø This clinic was established in 1992.

Ø The clinic caters to more than 100 new patients and more than 1000 old patients suffering from respiratory diseases every year.

Ø Children suffering from asthma are managed and followed up regularly.

Ø Patients are monitored for growth, development and side effects of the drug used in the treatment.

Ø Facilities for nebulisation of children who come with an acute exacerbation of asthma are available in the OPD.

Ø Parent education programme is conducted every year where parents and children are given information regarding the disease process, need for treatment, importance of compliance and regular follow up.

Ø This clinic also has a facility of estimating pulmonary functions by peak flow meter and PFT by spirometry equipment.

Ø Patients from other hospitals are often referred to this hospital for expert opinion and thorough evaluation.

Pediatric Centre of Excellence for HIV care (PCOE)
The Department of Pediatrics at the LTMGH houses the ‘Pediatric Center of Excellence for HIV Care [PCoE]’, which is the referral tertiary center for children with HIV for the state of Maharashtra.

Ø It is one of the seven Centers of Excellence in the country, providing comprehensive HIV care & treatment to 2770 registered HIV infected children as on 31st August, 2017.

Ø Palliative care is also provided for the children in need.

Ø The ‘Paediatric HIV Telemedicine Initiative’is an e-decentralized model of expert paediatric HIV care and a referral service which was started in 2013 as a pilot project through the PCoE in collaboration with NACO, MSACS, NHM, MCGM & UNICEF.

Ø This Telemedicine Initiative is a video-linked delivery of expert services, designed to reach the unreached HIV infected infants, children & adolescents with quality care, without them having to travel to Mumbai, thereby saving time, effort & expenses incurred for the same.

Ø Currently, we are linked with 35 ART centers from across Maharashtra and have reached out to nearly 2000 difficult-to-reach pediatric HIV patients providing expert advice and guidance on paediatric ART, management of opportunistic infections, management of treatment failures, counselling for HIV related issues, counselling for adolescent specific issues, age appropriate disclosure, in addition to mentoring & capacity building for health personnel, conducting mortality reviews, etc.

Pediatric Learning Disability Clinic

 

Ø This clinic was started in 1996 when it was the only centre for certification of specific learning disability, certified by the State of Maharashtra.

Ø This centre caters to testing of children with learning disorders, borderline intellectual functioning, slow learners,ADHD.

Ø It does a battery of tests required for testing intelligence and alsofor psycho-educationalpurposes.

Ø It offers comprehensive care for the diagnosis and management of these children including remedial education.

Ø Every year about 2000 children are certified from this centre.

Child Palliative Care OPD:

 

Ø This clinic was started in 2014 in collaboration with Cancer Patients Aid Association and Tata Memorial Hospital.

Ø Palliative Care for children with life limiting conditions aims at taking total care of the child including body, mind and spirit.

Ø It is a holistic, professional and active approach to caring that includes but is not restricted to pain and symptom management. It also involves providing support to the family.

Ø We offer palliative care services for various chronic disorders, thalassemia, HIV , congenital and metabolic disorders.

After Chemotherapy Clinic (ACT):

Ø This clinic was started on 2nd January 2018 by the Division of Pediatric Hematology- Oncology.

Ø The ACT Clinic aims to provide ongoing care for children with malignancies even after they have completed chemotherapy.

Ø A thorough clinical, endocrine, psychologic and emotional evaluation of children with malignancies who have completed 2 years post chemotherapy is undertaken in this clinic and appropriate remediation is done in case of any abnormalities.
